WASTE to WAVES

We've all seen EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) - It's the white packaging foam that protects new TV's, fridges, computers etc. Waste to Waves is 'turning trash into slash' in the US by creating a program where anybody can drop clean bits of EPS foam to certain surfstores so they can recycled back into surfboard blank foam via Marko Foam Blanks

My mate Cody Hess from California gave me the heads up on this link! He recently created a board of his own too reppin' the 1000SG stencil yew, international shaka ~!~

channel islands two piece deck pads are simple and effective. no frills just flat and grippy. i've used em for years, even while i was sponsored by other brands. i even tried to rip em off when i rode for kommunity project, but it was never the same. they never got it right. recently, rising material costs prompted scott aka scotty aka hawaiian scott, who is in charge of that sorta thing at channel islands, to visit the manufacturer to see how they could stay in production despite rising material costs. what he saw was mountains of EVA scraps. trash. useless waste. but what if we used it? used it to form the raw material for our deck pads? disposing of it is a burden, and it costs money, so why not? and so we did and now every deck pads unique; endless different patterns, variations, different colors. the manufacturer cuts down on waste, channel islands keeps making deck pads, we give what was doomed to be trash a little bit of life, a little bit of joy, everyone looks rad, everyone wins.

Contemporary 'Surf' Artist: Scott Redford

I came across Australian artist Scott Redford. I really liked his large scale approach to sculpture/installation and the mixture of surf culture with commercial signage + the broken boards!

"Scott Redford is a leading Australian artist who has firmly placed his home town, Queensland's Gold Coast, on the contemporary art map. This major solo exhibition showcases his development of the fictitious character Reinhardt Dammn in dialogue with key works from the last decade. 'Scott Redford: Introducing Reinhardt Dammn' includes surfboard sculptures, videos and paintings, suites of fibreglass objects and canvases with shiny, highly coloured acrylic surfaces"

This information-graphic was created by Environsurfer, an online surf store based in the US. The 1000SG project focuses on the environmental impact of surfboards but as you can see here it is not the only surfing product that needs improvement.

The evening at Patagonia Sydney (Nov 17 2011) told the surfboard graveyard story so far through artworks and a short film. There was also presentations/demonstrations of some of the environmental innovations happening within the surfing world + A RAFFLE of quality goods!

Smorgasboarder: Surf mag spread!

Smorgasboarder is a free mag that can be found at most legit surf stores! The Nov-Dec edition of mag is being dropped around Australia as I write this! The mag focuses on interesting stories from surfers and surfboard shapers in the community. 1000SG has feature spread (pg 72-73) - if you're in the Illawarra, Zink Surf Shop has fresh batch - get one while you can!

Live Art @ Landcare Dune Day 2011

Landcare Illawarra held a Dune Day Festival at Gerringong on the weekend. The LA' Division crew were on the live art side of things. Trait, Boyd-E and myself all had our brushes out and the artworks were donated for auction with the proceeds going to Landcare Illawarra.  


Landcare Illawarra is a community-based organisation operating in the areas of Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama on the NSW South Coast, they get involved in a broad range of environmental repair activities, such as bush regeneration.
